Women in siwa

Siwa is considered an extremely conservative society, even by Egyptian standards. Traditionally, both married and unmarried women alike do not leave the home unaccompanied, though stronger restrictions are placed on the movement of married women.  If and when they travel outside their home, they cover themselves from head to toe.  Accordingly, all travelers to Siwa, but especially females, should respect the local customs by dressing modestly.  Revealing clothing is considered disrespectful and may solicit unwanted gazes from Siwan men.  That said, Siwans are enormously hospitable, and as long as you are mindful of these cultural differences, you will be warmly welcomed.
